Another day, another great game of cricket! Yesterday we welcomed Ardleigh Green Havering Atte-Bower CC in round one of the The Cricketer National Village Cup.
The visitors won the toss and put us into bat, we lost hero of the preliminary round Ben early strangled down the leg side, but a watchful Doctor Guy saw off the new ball and Mox was a full flow to make a wonderful 90 before missing a straight one. Then the fun began, aggressive knocks from Schofield (28), Sullivan (55) and fine finishing from Pettit (35*) and a few lusty blows from the returning Tom Sawdon (17) saw us to 289 for 8 in our 40 overs. A good score, but not un-gettable at the Brow!
We wondered how the opposition would go about the run chase and only one word describes their game plan….aggressive! It was clearly not a day for the bowlers as AG&HAB’s top order were making a real game of it, then the moment of the day……a quick single was taken to Dave “Skittles” Schofield at mid off and what a mistake that was, a swoop, a clean pick up, a moment to steady and a direct hit was enough to send the opener, (Who was flying by the way), back to the hutch for an excellent 81.
Although game was always in the balance, the required rate after that moment did continue to climb and with 50 needed from the last 4 over, our guests had no option but to throw the kitchen sink and, on that day, the cricketing gods smiled upon us as we bowled them out for 266 securing a hard fought 23 run victory. Bowling mentions must go Ben Bowles and to Dave Brooker, both going at less than a run a ball and really pulling it back for us in the middle overs, the latter also picking up 3 well deserved wickets along the way. Skittles also picked up 3 wickets, possibly slightly less deservedly so that DJ Brooker.
After the game, in the freezing cold, the opposition stayed well over an hour for a beer a giggle, a real good bunch of lads who are welcome at The Brow anytime and we hope to see them again in the future.
The next round sees us away to Woolpit Cricket Club in 2 weeks’ time. Woolpit defeated us in round one a few years ago and we will be looking to level that score as the march to Lords continues for the Lions!
